Mobility scooter dimensions: doors, storage and access

A scooter needs to fit your everyday route as well as your body. Measure the narrowest clear doorway opening, including hinges and handles, and the space needed to turn before and after it. The vehicle width alone cannot show whether it can negotiate a tight right-angle entrance.

Measure the whole journey into storage

  • The clear gate or doorway opening, not the frame width.
  • Corridor width and the space on each side of a turn.
  • Thresholds, ramps and any step that requires a different access solution.
  • The final parking space, including room to get on and off.

Check your seated position

Compare the seat height, legroom, armrest spacing and reach to the controls. Ask what adjusts on the exact model. If you use a walking aid, include its storage position and check that it does not obstruct steering or access.

Dimensions also affect classification

Vehicle class depends on more than a speed setting. UK guidance includes width and weight limits, so do not treat a wide cabin model as a pavement scooter solely because it can be driven slowly. Read our UK rules guide and confirm the classification of the supplied version.

Discuss your shortlist
