Mobility scooter batteries and charging

The right battery depends on your route and where you can charge. Before choosing a scooter, decide whether the whole vehicle can reach a suitable socket or whether you need a battery that can be removed and carried indoors. Removable does not necessarily mean light enough for you to lift comfortably.

Compare like-for-like capacity

Ask for the battery voltage, capacity and chemistry on the written specification. An amp-hour figure alone does not describe the energy in batteries of different voltages. Check which battery is included and which larger packs are optional; the maximum advertised range may refer to an optional configuration.

Plan a practical charging routine

Use the charger specified for the exact battery and follow its instructions for connection, ventilation and temperature. Keep the charging location dry and protect the cable from trips or damage. Ask the supplier how to store the battery during a period without use and when it should be checked.

Before ordering a removable battery

  • Confirm the pack weight and handle position.
  • Check whether charging off the scooter is supported.
  • Ask how the battery locks in place and whether a spare key is supplied.
  • Check replacement availability and compatibility by model and battery code.
