Which UK class is this model, and who tells me?

We do, in writing, before you buy. Which rules apply to you depends entirely on the machine: a class 2 scooter is incapable of exceeding 4 mph and belongs on the pavement; a class 3 scooter is incapable of exceeding 8 mph, seats one person, is no wider than 0.85 m and no heavier than 150 kg unladen, must be registered with the DVLA and may be ridden from the age of 14; anything faster, wider or heavier is not a mobility scooter at all but a motor vehicle, needing registration, a driving licence and, in most cases, insurance. Your written quote states the class your machine can be registered in and what that class requires of you — the figures on this page are the start of that answer, not the end of it.

How fast does it go in the UK?

Every For Motion model can be supplied limited to 8 mph, which is the ceiling UK law puts on a mobility scooter. Where your chosen model can also meet the other class 3 limits — one seat, no wider than 0.85 m, no heavier than 150 kg unladen, with the 4 mph footway limiter and the speed indicator the regulations require — it can be registered with the DVLA as a class 3 machine, and we confirm that in writing for your model before you buy. A faster version of the same machine exists, and in Britain it is for private land only: a golf course, an estate, a private site. We never call a machine road legal above 8 mph, because in this country it is not one.

Do I need a driving licence, DVLA registration, insurance or a helmet?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the class stated in your quote. A class 2 scooter (incapable of exceeding 4 mph) needs no licence, no registration and no insurance by law. A class 3 scooter (incapable of exceeding 8 mph) needs no licence but must be registered with the DVLA — there is no vehicle tax to pay — and may be ridden from the age of 14. Insurance is not compulsory for either class; we recommend it all the same. Above 8 mph the machine is a motor vehicle: registration, a driving licence and, in most cases, insurance — or it stays on private land. No class requires a helmet. Can I try it before I buy?

Not in the United Kingdom — we have no dealers or showrooms in Britain, so there is no test drive or home demonstration we can offer. What we do offer is a person in Heerde who rides these machines and will talk you through this model on the phone or WhatsApp, a written quote with the full price, and your statutory 14-day right to cancel once it has arrived.

Can I get funding for it?

Mobility scooters are not generally available on the NHS, and For Motion is not an accredited Motability supplier. The routes are a charity grant, VAT relief where you and the machine qualify (a class 3 machine does not qualify automatically, and a signed eligibility declaration is required), or a private purchase. How do I pay?

Your quote states the full price of the machine and what it includes. You pay in full before we prepare it, using the payment methods offered at checkout, or on invoice where we agree that beforehand. We do not offer instalments, credit or leasing in the United Kingdom.

Question 7

What are my rights if something is wrong?

Accepted Answer

Buying at a distance, you have 14 days to cancel without giving a reason under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and your rights to goods that are of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described come from the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — including a 30-day short-term right to reject. Where is it serviced and repaired?

In our own workshop in Heerde, the Netherlands, with original parts — every machine is assembled and checked there before it leaves. We cannot promise UK service partners or a mobile engineer today; a great many faults are settled on the phone first, and for the rest we agree collection and return with you in writing. Delivery to the United Kingdom on request. Give us your postcode and the quote will say whether and when we can deliver, what it costs, and how the import formalities are handled. The machine is built up, checked and set to you in Heerde before it travels.
